There have been many kind words written about Krautrock recently with so many obscure bands re-emerging on CD reissue from the ashes like a phoenix and bequeathing all manner of musical mayhem upon a receptive audience. Most of us grew up with a diet of Can, Amon Düül, Nektar, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Shultz, Guru Guru, Ash Ra Temple and some were lucky enough to lend their ears to a band called Wallenstein. If the sound of cascades of brilliant piano, imaginative lead violin, fluent guitar, very clever song writing and pounding keyboards is your cup of tea, then this should be on your short list of German bands to try. This is another classic band who failed to break through the ignorance and non acceptance of what was the zenith of progressive rock music’s best period of originality. Nektar, Triumvirat and Wallenstein would be my 3 most respected and favourite German bands as I always found their material to be pretty accessible, completely different from the norm and always well composed.
The side long suite for rock orchestra moves and shakes through many different time patterns, themes and directions but always returns to a central theme that will never leave your mind. If you have heard Omega’s 200 Years After The Last War, this should impress just as much. The variety with Wallenstein’s music becomes very apparent with only a few listens and it is easy to be impressed with the English lyrics that contain very few accents or inflections at all. Let’s face it, no one likes to hear great music spoiled by a singer who does not have a proper handle on the English language but should be made to sing in his main tongue instead. These guys are cunning linguists! They also released several earlier albums and one in particular called Blitzkreig. After over 30 years of dedicated collecting and searching, I finally scored a copy! This release particularly stands out for me and is highly recommended.
