Notes

Jacques Ellul, the French theologian and socialist who was one of my early intellectual heroes (and about whom I wrote my first book, which however has languished in an unpublished state since I typed out the manuscript in 1973), chose not to use page-numbered references in his masterpiece, The Technological Society. "Books," he wrote, "are made to be read and not consulted."

I always admired Ellul’s stance, frowned upon though it be by scholars, many of whom seem to spend the best years of their lives chasing down bibliographical citation of items they never really read anyway. This is called "control of the sources" in the jargon, but one has to ask exactly who (or what) is controlling whom.

My feeling is that normal people are by and large only distracted by footnotes and reference numbers cluttering up the text. On the other hand, one person in ten who reads this book may have a legitimate desire or need to know where a certain quotation comes from. In addition, it is only right - in a book such as this which relies to a considerable extent on secondary sources - that due acknowledgment be given the many authors on whose work my own research has depended.

It is for these reasons that I have adopted the system used in this book: incipits of quotations from the text are keyed to the short references in this Notes section; full citations of each source will be found in the bibliography that follows.

References to the printed booklet included in The Young Persons’ Guide to King Crimson are herein indicated by the abbreviation YPG followed by column numbers. The booklet itself, however, contains neither page nor column numbers. Therefore, if you wish to find the exact location of a YPG quotation listed in these Notes, you must number the columns in YPG yourself. Begin with "1" at the first column (1968-June 1).
